Statistics on safety hazards of carbon steel storage tanks

From previous explosion accidents of stainless steel and carbon steel storage tanks in the United States, it can be found that older stainless steel and carbon steel storage tanks are prone to cracking accidents in the welds between the tank wall and the tank bottom.1950Stainless steel carbon steel storage tanks repaired and built before 2000 generally do not meet the current industry standards for fire and explosion relief. When designing atmospheric stainless steel storage tanks for storing flammable and combustible liquids, it should be considered that once the stainless steel carbon steel storage tank explodes, it should be allowed to crack along the weld between the tank wall and the tank top. This prevents stainless steel carbon steel storage tanks from being blown away or bursting along the side seams. Many institutions in the United States have established design standards and specifications for stainless steel carbon steel storage tanks. American Petroleum InstituteAPI-650“Steel welded oil tank”The standard has requirements for the design of stainless steel storage tanks.
Neglect of inspection, improper repair and maintenance: If the stainless steel carbon steel storage tank is improperly repaired, maintained, and neglected to inspect, the stainless steel carbon steel storage tank will be seriously damaged when the steam in the tank explodes. Stainless steel carbon steel storage tanks are more susceptible to damage when the strength of the weld between the tank wall and the tank bottom is weakened by corrosion, or when the strength of the weld between the tank wall and the tank top is greater than the strength of the weld between the tank wall and the tank bottom. The practice of laying gravel or oil spill absorbent around the tank base is more likely to cause tank bottom corrosion, because after many years of use, the bottom of some stainless steel and carbon steel storage tanks, especially old tanks, may be lower than the ground, which will cause moisture to accumulate at the bottom of the tank, eventually leading to the weakening of the welds between the tank bottom, tank wall and tank bottom. Another situation is that when the tank top or accessories on the tank top are replaced or otherwise modified, the strength of the weld between the tank top and the tank wall may be greater than the strength of the weld between the tank wall and the tank bottom.
